The Sheepscot Wellspring Land Alliance jointly maintains a 26-mile network of trails in Montville with the George’s
River Land Trust. All of the trails are well marked and most are blazed with paint. There are several points of entry and maps are located at two locations, the Bog Brook trailhead on the Halldale Rd. and the Northern Headwaters trailhead just off the Halldale Rd, on the Whitten Hill Rd. (Download map). Currently, SWLA has 15 miles of trails. Trails are for foot travel only including hiking and snowshoeing; cross-country skiing is not recommended. By facilitating access and use of lands in the area, SWLA hopes to strengthen support for land conservation and traditional uses in our region. Since most of the land in the watershed is privately owned, the existence of a trail network depends upon the cooperation and generosity of private landowners. Please be aware that trails cross private and SWLA-owned lands. Your help in caring for these trails to ensure their continued use is important. Please carry out what you carry in. If you are interested in helping to work on or maintain these trails please give us a call. We need trail stewards to periodically inspect each section of trail. Tasks include being sure the trail is clear and has no hazards, clearing downed trees, branches and brush and touching up paint blazes. For up-to-date information about the trails or to volunteer please contact us at 589-3230.
Check out SWLA's newest trail completed in fall 2009. The 1 1/2-mile Hemlock Hollow Hollow trail creates a new loop linking the Hogback Connector trail and the Northern Headwaters trail.
The Bog Brook Trail is recognized by Maine Birding Trail as a recommended place to bird in the midcoast. SWLA is listed in the Midcoast Region #33 in the free downloadble brochure for the state. Click on Trail/Map at the Maine Birding Trail website to download brochure.
